Our member league GREY2K USA announces that Oregon has become the 42nd state to ban definitively the cruelty of dog racing.
The bill to prohibit dog racing was signed into law by Oregon Governor Kate Brown. The SB 1504 was supported by Senate President Peter Courtney, which also restricts internet wagering on greyhounds.
Racing began in Oregon in 1933, when the legislature passed a bill making the state the second in the nation to authorize pari-mutuel wagering on dogs. The campaign to end dog racing started in the 1990’s, when it came to light the suffering endured by innocent dogs at the local Portland track.
We will never give up until dog racing ends everywhere.Greyhound racing will never come back to Oregon again. In speaking for the passage of his final, legacy bill, Senator Courtney made it clear that dog racing belongs in the past. “If there is ever an issue that is not Democratic, not Republican, not urban, and not rural, it’s animals,” he said. “I do not know how you could do this to an animal that you are using to make money. I do not know how you could treat an animal like that.”
