We all have hoped for a different end, but the 1,600 animals found alive on board of the Elbeik vessel will be euthanized. The same end occurred few weeks ago to the cattle aboard the Karim-Allah.
Elbeik left from Tarragona last December with more than 1,700 cows but after three months of sailing in the Mediterranean sea almost 200 animals died: 10 bodies were found on board, while another 179 were chopped during the journey and thrown into the sea.
According to the inspection report of the Spanish veterinarian authorities: “The most remarkable thing at the time of the inspection was the bad general state of the animals in all the pens [..] it is possible to observe a considerable loss of weight, [..] ribs and vertebrae are visible with naked eye, as well as an evident dehydration. [..] Some of these cachectic animals have been found in a stuporous state, being unable to open their eyes and react to stimulus”. The veterinarians also reported that the vessel was overloaded and animals have their hooves covered by feces and urine with the consequent impossibility for them to lay down in a dry and clean area.
Animals have showed detrimental health conditions and welfare status, signs of prolonged sufferings with development of cachexia, dermatological, ophthalmological and problem of mobility.
It’s time for all of us to be silent, reflect and change our attitude and way of life.
WE DON’T ONLY HAVE TO RAISE THE VOICE FOR A BAN ON LIVE TRANSPORTS, but also we must CHANGE OUR DIET in order not to contribute to the death of other animals anymore.
