How much fear, suffering and dread you can still notice in Camillo’s eyes, dog rescued by OIPA Italy volunteers of Partenopoli (Avellino province) in pitiful conditions. Sighted for some time while wandering through the countryside, it was difficult to approach him to verify his health and volunteers were seriously worried about his life. After doing everything to gain his trust, bringing him food every day and guaranteeing him a small shelter where he could protect himself from the rain, one day Camilo decided it was time to get caught.
Taken to the vet, he was tested positive for leishmaniasis and found to be affected by mange, for which he immediately began a double treatment. Welcomed to the shelter where OIPA volunteers host dogs rescued from the street, Camillo seemed to be recovering well, sadly after the first ten days he started showing show signs of dejection. Always hidden in the kennel, he also showed a lack of appetite.
Brought back to the clinic, additional tests revealed a very high level of diabetes, which is why Camillo is now undergoing specific treatments and he is fed with food specific for his condition. It was not easy for our volunteers as it was necessary to take Camillo to the vet clinic every day for insulin treatment, but amid enormous difficulties and expensive treatments, 15 days after the therapies, Camillo, who turned out to be a very sweet and loving dog, seems to respond well and is regaining strength. His leishmaniasis is improving, but diabetes needs to be kept under control.
As always, OIPA volunteers count on the support of people who cannot remain indifferent to the suffering of animals.
