Today, take action and spread awareness on the cruelty of long-distance transport and export of farmed animals globally.
On 17 January 2023, during the AGRIFISH Council meeting, the Portuguese delegation supported by France, Greece, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania and Spain initially, submitted a POSITION PAPER to block the revision of the animal transport regulation, including opposing a ban on exports from EU to third countries. Other national ministers endorsed the same position by raising the number of blockers to 15 EU Member States, allowing the industry to continue to make profit from animal suffering.
The vast majority of EU citizens (94 percent as consulted by the Commission in 2021 and 2022) has repeatedly called on the EU to end live animal trade banning live exports and long-distance animal transport. EU ministers have a final say on EU laws, so it is crucial that European citizens raise their voice calling out these 16 States for blocking the will of millions of citizens who are asking to stop the suffering of millions of animals on ‘business as usual’ basis.
Germany and Luxembourg have already prohibited the cruel trade of live animal exports and together with the Netherlands, Sweden, Belgium and Denmark, which all together represent the VUGHT Alliance, have called for an EU-level ban on this.
AWF investigation unreleased footage of live exports from Spanish ports to the Middle East, showing inhumane conditions and cruelty.
Every year, millions of farmed animals are transported from the EU to the Middle East for fattening or slaughtering. They travelled for several days on trucks and ships confined in filthy conditions. They are terrified and confused, forced to stand or lay in their own waste. Some of them will die at the port of destination, while others will arrive ill or with painful injuries.
Today is a global day of action to help ban the horrors of live animal exports and we want you to be part of it.
