We all know that sea turtles are labelled as endangered species thus it’s definitely prohibited to capture them. In Tunisia, specifically in Sidi Youssef Kerkennah, these threatened species are being captured on daily basis by the local fishermen to sell the meat.

They capture them, leave them laying on their back suffering until they chop their heads off and sell them.

The capture of these species started to increase in a scary way after the Tunisian Revolution following the absence of Police, the decrease of Control and the state weakness.

We really need to make awareness campaigns, and increase the control and why not make it a felony and charge those who keep capturing them in a way to make it stop. It’s illegal and the authorities should do their job and ban their capture and be strict with those who don’t follow the law.

Many human activities have negative effects on loggerhead sea turtle populations. The prolonged time required for loggerheads to reach sexual maturity and the high mortality rates of eggs and young turtles from natural phenomena compound the problems of population reduction as a consequence of human activities.

Loggerhead sea turtles were once intensively hunted for their meat and eggs; consumption has decreased, however, due to worldwide legislation. Despite this, turtle meat and eggs are still consumed in countries where regulations are not strictly enforced.

Eating turtle eggs or meat can cause serious illness due to harmful bacteria, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Serratia marcescens, and high levels of toxic metals that build up through bioaccumulation.
