Meru Animal Welfare, OIPA’s member legue in Tanzania, is at the forefront of protecting animal welfare including through a campaign to spay and neuter stray animals. This organization works within local communities to spread awareness of the benefits of spaying and neutering, helping people understand how it prevents suffering and improves animal health. On World Spay Day, they create a future with fewer suffering stray animals by supporting our educational programs.

Why the World Spay Day?

Spaying and neutering, along with vaccinations and building appropriate and safe shelters, remains one of the most effective methods in combating straying. World Spay Day, which is celebrated every year on the last Tuesday in February, aims precisely to remind people of the importance of this practice, which helps prevent unwanted litters and the subsequent abandonment of animals, dogs and cats in particular.

The international campaign dedicated to World Spay Day, which falls not coincidentally just before the start of spring, a time when many animals enter the breeding season, reminds us what each of us can do to contribute to the cause:

  1. Spay or neuter your pet. If you have not done so, schedule the procedure.
  2. Support local spay/neuter programs-if you can, volunteer at local organizations or veterinary clinics that offer spay/neuter services to pet owners in need.
  3. Spread awareness: use social media to share information about World Spay Day and the importance of spaying and neutering.
  4. Donate to animal welfare organizations: if you can, donate to animal shelters, rescue groups or organizations dedicated to animal welfare. Your support can help fund spay/neuter initiatives.
  5. Participate in local events: check to see if World Spay/neuter Day events, workshops or fundraisers are taking place in your community and get involved.
