ANIMALS AND ENVIRONMENT PART OF THE ITALIAN CONSTITUTION. A REFORM IN LINE WITH THE LISBON TREATY THAT RECOGNIZES ANIMALS AS SENTIENT BEINGS

The Italian Chamber of Deputies gave a definitive go-ahead for the reform of articles 9 and 41 of the Constitution. This simply means animals and environment will be integral part of Italian law.

 

“It is right that the protection of environment, biodiversity and ecosystems become a founding value of our Republic, also in the interest of future generations. It is an essential step forward for a country like Italy that is facing its own ecological transition.” – stated the Minister for the Ecological Transition Mr. Roberto Cingolani.

 

The President of OIPA Italy Massimo Comparotto has publicly welcomed this significant reform. The Italian Constitution will officially include the concept of environmental protection, sustainable development and will regulate methods and forms of animal protection in line with the Lisbon Treaty of 2007, which recognizes animals as “sentient beings“.
